Often called the “Stonehenge of Derbyshire,” the Neolithic monument of Arbor Low comprises large limestone slabs arranged in a circular formation atop a high plateau. Local legend claims that those who spend the night within the circle may awaken the spirits of its ancient builders. Nearby stands Gib Hill Barrow, the largest of its kind in Derbyshire, where human remains were discovered in the 19th century. The site’s name is said to stem from a man who was gibbeted on the earthwork.
