In 1889, the Stockport Advertiser and Guardian reported on a haunting in a house off Astley Street. A man and his housekeeper were interrupted at supper by the sudden appearance of a ghostly figure resembling the man’s recently deceased wife. The apparition entered the room, overturned the table, and left without another word or gesture. News of the event spread rapidly, prompting crowds to gather in hopes of another sighting, though the ghost never reappeared. Some neighbours moved away, citing unease, while others remained despite their discomfort. The street has since undergone extensive redevelopment.
