Bate Hall, the oldest pub in Macclesfield, dates back to the early 16th century and is said to be haunted by several ghosts. The most prominent is a young woman in a long grey dress, reportedly accused of witchcraft and hanged from the banister by those she sought refuge from. Though sightings have not been reported in many years, unexplained activity such as doors moving on their own and photographic anomalies have continued. Additional ghostly figures include a former landlord and an elderly man, both reported by past occupants.
