Birkenhead Hall, Birkenhead

At Birkenhead Hall in the seventeenth century, Lady Powell, consumed by jealousy over her husband Sir Thomas’s supposed affection for a young maid, pushed the girl over the banisters to her death. Lady Powell fled to a convent in France, while Sir Thomas buried the maid on his Welsh estate and lived out his days in bitterness and isolation. The maid’s ghost was long said to haunt the staircase where she died, and witnesses claimed her presence lingered even after the hall was demolished.
