Roman soldier apparitions have long been reported near the Pennine Way above Torside Reservoir. Sightings are most frequent around the first full moon of spring, with witnesses describing small groups or entire marching legions. The western side of the hill is also the setting for the Longdendale Lights, a recurring and unexplained phenomenon. These range from distant torch-like pinpricks to bright, blue searchlight beams that illuminate the valley for several minutes. Rescue teams, often called out to investigate, have witnessed the lights themselves.
