Bollin Hall, Wilmslow

Bollin Hall once stood beside the River Bollin near Wilmslow Church before being demolished for the railway. Local legend long claimed it was the birthplace of Anne Boleyn, although this is almost certainly untrue. Stories said her ghost returned after her execution, seen carrying her head beneath her arm. Another tale, printed around 1720, told of loud moans and hammering in the old banqueting hall. When local men investigated, they discovered a skeleton hidden in a secret compartment above a closet. After the bones were buried in Wilmslow churchyard, the haunting was said to have ended.
