Along the rocky stretch of Brinksway in Stockport, once home to navvies who carved dwellings into the cliff while building the great viaduct, stories persist of a grim haunting. Legend tells that a woman named Peggy Travis was brutally murdered there by drunken men, and her ghost is said to walk nightly through the passage known as “the Rock.” Victorians also spoke of a dead newborn found in one of the caves and of shadows and whispers that unsettled lone travellers after dark.
