Stockport Central Library is said to be haunted by several apparitions, most often in its basement. Staff and cleaners have reported an elderly man who vanishes mid-stride, a similarly dressed elderly woman, and the “Scarlet Lady” or “Woman in Red,” seen gliding through walls in the early 1980s before apparently disappearing after renovation work. Another witness once mistook a phantom for a living colleague in the upper library. Other phenomena include cold spots, unexplained typing sounds, and animals refusing to enter certain areas. Despite the activity, the ghosts are regarded as harmless presences.
