Charlecote House, Charlecote

Charlecote Park, long home to the Lucy family, is known for its links to Shakespeare, but its more recent legend concerns Alianore Fairfax-Lucy. In her later years, she made a personal retreat of the Tack Room, filling it with her belongings. After her death in 1979, staff arranged her hats on the stag’s antlers as a light-hearted tribute. By morning, they were found back in the blanket chest—repeatedly. On the final occasion, Alianore’s photograph had also vanished, as if the spirited former resident had made her displeasure known.
