Clegg Hall is associated with one of Lancashire’s most enduring legends. According to tradition, a “wicked uncle” murdered two orphaned heirs—either by stabbing them or throwing them into the moat—to seize the estate. The hall was subsequently said to be haunted by angry spirits or “boggarts,” who disturbed the peace even after the house was rebuilt. Various attempts were made to lay the ghosts, including an episode where a pious monk supposedly tricked the spirits with a symbolic sacrifice.
