Errwood Hall, Buxton

In 1984 a couple resting near the Grimshawe family graves above Errwood Hall saw a lady in satin and lace, like a figure from a Gainsborough painting, who smiled before vanishing without trace. Another haunting was described by a former maid, who saw a glowing figure outside the hall on the night of 15 November 1914. The apparition, with hollow eyes, beckoned and pointed up the path before running into the darkness. A priest later said Mass to lay the spirit, but the maid said she could never forget it.
