At Four Lane Ends in Mobberley a ghostly reputation clung to the crossroads where a coffin was unearthed during the construction of Vardon Bridge. According to accounts from the late 19th century, this was thought to be the burial site of a suicide victim, as such individuals were historically interred at crossroads outside consecrated ground. The grave was re-covered but later exposed again during further work, reinforcing local superstitions. Children were said to hurry past the spot, whistling to keep up their courage.
