Gawsworth Hall and the nearby Old Rectory are both linked to Mary Fitton, often identified as Shakespeare’s “Dark Lady.” Her ghost, described as a lady in ancient costume, is said to walk between the Hall, church and Rectory on autumn nights. Former residents Raymond and Monica Richards reported many disturbances, including the scent of incense that appeared before visits from clergy, and once found a hidden human skeleton behind a cupboard in the Priest’s Room.
