Leadmill to Abney Road

A carter regularly travelled the lonely lane between Leadmill and Abney, where a phantom figure was said to appear and calmly take hold of his horse’s bridle, leading it for a short distance. The driver and horse remained unafraid, but his dog would cower in terror each time. On one journey, startled by the ghost’s sudden appearance, the carter instinctively raised his whip, only for his arm to fall limp and useless at his side. He remained paralysed for the rest of his life.
