Lud’s Church, Gradbach

Deep in Back Forest near Wincle lies Lud’s Church, a narrow mossy chasm long linked with ancient worship and ghostly lore. Said to have sheltered the outlawed Lollards in the 15th century, legend tells that Walter de Ludauk’s followers were captured here and his granddaughter slain at the entrance, her spirit becoming Lady Lud. Others connect the place to the Celtic god Lugh, giving rise to tales of druids, sacrifice, and the Green Man. Strange lights, headless figures, and eerie noises once known as “the voice of the Loud One” are still said to haunt this sacred cleft.
