At Manor Farm Cottage in Woodley, footsteps were often heard on the stairs, and neighbours once saw a candlelight moving in an upstairs room that had been sealed off. Later, a woman in a long dress was seen crossing the stream outside. The haunting was linked to the 19th-century murder of Betty Shallcross, whose body was found in the nearby shippon, demolished in the 1970s. Horses stabled there became restless, and visitors felt watched. Whether the ghost is Betty Shallcross, her killer Samuel Fallows, or another witness to the crime remains unknown.
