Dating to around 2000 BC, the Nine Ladies stone circle on Stanton Moor is steeped in legend and superstition. Folklore claims the stones are nine women turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath while the Devil played his fiddle, represented by the nearby King Stone or “Fiddler’s Chair.” Witnesses report a dark male figure standing near the circle, strange lights, and a ghostly white lady. The nearby Earl Grey Monument is also haunted by a spectral black dog with flaming eyes. Modern witches and druids still gather here, and many locals avoid the site after dark.
