Phantom Lorry, A57 between Hyde and Mottram

Along the A57 between Hyde and Mottram, a “phantom lorry” was blamed for a series of mysterious accidents beginning in 1930, when a motorcyclist was killed after swerving to avoid a vehicle that police insisted did not exist. Dozens of similar crashes followed, often preceded by the sound of heavy footsteps on the empty road. The coroner himself coined the term “phantom lorry,” and despite investigations and later road changes, reports of eerie incidents continue.
