Roger’s Pit, Wilmslow

Roger’s Pit, once located above Hill Top House in Wilmslow, was long associated with a local haunting. Many years before the pit was filled in during the 1830s road improvements, a man named Harrison, of Old Street near the church, drowned himself there. His restless ghost was said to appear on moonlit nights, making the area feared after dark. By the late nineteenth century both the pit and its ghost had vanished, leaving only the memory of Harrison’s haunting among local folklore.
