Sallet Hole Mine, Coombs Dale

Sallet Hole Mine, situated along Coombs Dale near Stoney Middleton, is associated with a long-standing local legend of a spectral miner and his dog. The ghost is described as an elderly man wearing a long coat and flat cap—distinctive garb that sets him apart from modern safety regulations. He is often accompanied by a ghostly dog, and both are said to vanish when approached.

One witness, Bernard Marshall, reported seeing the figure while working underground in the Unwin Vein. His companion sensed something too, but would neither confirm nor deny what they encountered. The appearance of the figure and his clothing have led some to speculate that he is one of the “owd mon”—a term used locally for the old lead miners who once worked these veins in dangerous and primitive conditions.
