The quiet hamlet of Shatton is said to be haunted by the ghost of an old farmer, dressed in a smock and slouch hat, carrying a lantern with a tallow candle. One winter’s night, Dr. Andrews’s housekeeper, Mrs. Minnie Addy, saw the figure while crossing the narrow bridge over the River Noe. Believing she was being followed, she hurried home, later learning that her pursuer matched the description of a well-known local phantom. The ghost is still said to wander the path between Shatton and Offerton, lantern in hand, on dark nights.
