St. Thomas Becket Church, Chapel-en-le-Frith

The churchyard at Chapel-en-le-Frith is said to carry a deep sense of sorrow linked to a tragedy of 1648. After the Battle of Ribble Moor, it was claimed that 1,500 captured Scottish Royalist soldiers were confined in the village church for sixteen days without food or sanitation. Forty-four died standing, and many more perished soon after their release. Though the 13th-century church was later replaced, visitors still report feelings of despair, strange groaning sounds, and the distant echo of a Scottish lament drifting through the graveyard where the men were buried.
