The Cock & Bottle, York

At the Cock and Bottle on Skeldergate, staff and licensees have reported unexplained activity, including doors opening, objects moving, sudden cold spots and an oppressive atmosphere. An indistinct male figure in period dress, sometimes linked in local tradition to George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, has reportedly been seen, and a face resembling him is said to appear in stonework. A skeleton unearthed on the site and the pub’s use of older timbers contribute to its reputation, though accounts remain anecdotal.
