When Mr. and Mrs. Denham moved into a cottage at Over Haddon, they soon learned why it had stood empty for years. Mrs. Denham often felt a terrifying presence in the pantry, while her husband and nephews repeatedly saw an elderly man in a silk hat and frock coat walking through the garden gate and along the path. Attempts to catch or deter him failed, and his visits continued. A local preacher later suggested the ghost might be that of an unburied man whose spirit could only rest if the burial service were read over him.
