The Ghost of Stythians, Truro

In a Victorian account from Stythians, thrifty widow An Jenny Hendy died leaving no money found. A “white witch” staged a midnight raising of Jenny’s spirit in the churchyard, later exposed as a hoax by her accomplice in shroud. Rumours that Jenny’s ghost walked nonetheless spread, prompting debtors to return money anonymously. Jenny’s pocket and will were later found hidden in the thatch. Witnesses also reported household noises, a figure beckoning from the yard, and travellers mysteriously lifted over a stile near her cottage.
