The Peculiar Path is a folklore and paranormal archive covering Cheshire, Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, and Staffordshire. It grew out of a long-standing interest in regional ghost books and collecting and mapping accounts of the paranormal. The project started as a personal map and a set of notes, and has since become a searchable database of haunted locations, sourced from books, newspapers, and historical records.
The current scope is three counties, but the intention is to expand it over time.
A note on Belief
I don’t believe in ghosts. That’s probably worth saying upfront. This site isn’t about proving or disproving anything, it’s about documenting stories that have attached themselves to places, and making sure they don’t disappear. The accounts here come from historical sources, old newspapers, and firsthand recollections. They tell us something real about the people who reported them and the places they lived, whatever you think of the phenomena themselves.
Visiting Locations
Many of the locations in the archive are open to the public. Where that’s the case, I’ve included visiting information on the entry. Some locations are private property — they’re included for their stories, not as an invitation to visit. Please respect that. A small number are demolished or no longer exist in any meaningful form.
If you’re visiting anywhere featured here, always check access before you go.
Nathan.
