Ashley Hall near Bowdon was said to be haunted by a sorrowful White Lady who appeared in the Cedar Room, a former nursery. A houseguest once awoke twice to see her silently crossing the room and vanishing through a locked door. When the frightened visitor mentioned leaving, the hostess admitted that others had seen the same apparition. Years earlier, her child had tried to hide its toys so that “the White Lady wouldn’t get them.” The spectral woman was believed to linger restlessly in this part of the old Cheshire house.
