Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick, believed to be around 5,000 years old, is associated with various local legends and unexplained phenomena. Visitors have reported difficulty counting the stones, and sightings of strange lights—so-called ‘earth lights’—within the circle, including a notable 1919 account of a glowing orb that approached and vanished. Folklore once held that the stones were men turned to stone, and the site has been linked to ancient funeral rites.
