In late 1876, railway workers at the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway engine shed in Chorley reported mysterious phenomena following a nearby suicide. Large stones were reportedly thrown at workers over several nights, with no perpetrator ever found. The events caused several employees to leave their jobs. A formal investigation by railway detectives yielded no explanation.
