Lost Lad, Derwent Edge

Near Back Tor on Derwent Edge stands the cairn of the Lost Lad, marking the spot where a young shepherd named Abraham Lowe and his dog perished in a snowstorm. Before dying, the boy scratched “Lost Lad” into a rock. His body was found months later, and passing shepherds added stones to the cairn in remembrance. On midwinter nights, walkers and farmers have reported seeing the figures of a boy and his dog wandering the moor, or hearing a plaintive cry said to be the child calling for his mother.
