Old Dolly’s Ghost, Penzance

Dolly Pentreath, often said to be the last native speaker of Cornish, was buried at Paul, where her monument was later found to be misplaced. Locals believed her spirit haunted Mousehole after death, unable to rest until her true grave was recognised. When workmen repositioned the stone, a woman’s skeleton thought to be Dolly’s was uncovered. The discovery was said to bring peace to her long-unquiet spirit, ending the village’s nightly disturbances.
