In 1914, miners at the recently reopened Ollersett coal pit near New Mills reported encounters with a headless ghost. The apparition screamed and raised its arms before vanishing, terrifying several night-shift workers who insisted it was no hallucination. The haunting was linked to an earlier local murder in which a woman was found decapitated near the pit, and to the later discovery of a gold locket and shreds of her clothing at the shaft’s base. The ghost, said to have been exorcised years before by a praying miner, appeared to have returned with the reopening of the mine
