Built in 1690 by George Ley after a big win at cards, the Pack o’ Cards is famed for its unusual design — four floors, fifty-two stairs, and fifty-two windows to represent a deck of cards. Among its resident spirits is a woman in a long white dress, said to appear in the Oak Room where she once stayed. A second ghost, a small man with a long beard, has also been glimpsed. Hidden within the inn is an old “press-gang table,” where locals once concealed themselves to avoid forced naval service.
