Roman Centurion, Offerton

A Victorian house on Marple Road in Offerton, built over the line of an earlier stone-laid track thought to form part of a Roman route, is associated with repeated reports of a Romano-British or Roman-looking figure. Sightings began in the 1970s and 1980s, with residents describing a tall man in a cloak secured by a brooch who appeared in daylight in the hallway or kitchen before fading away. A young child independently remarked on seeing the same figure. The house stands near the historic ford over the River Goyt, and excavations have revealed a possible causeway and a brick-lined well.
