St. George’s Vicarage, Stockport

For more than twenty years, Canon Wilfrid Garlick and his wife heard unexplained footsteps in the attic of St George’s Vicarage in Stockport. The noises began soon after they moved in around 1948 and persisted intermittently for decades, often coinciding with deaths or crises in the family of Archdeacon Thorpe, the vicarage’s former resident. The Garlicks, amused rather than alarmed, dubbed the presence “the Archdeacon” and never discovered a natural cause.
