In 1933, Mrs. Curzon and her family fled their home on Stockport Road, Cheadle, after repeated ghostly disturbances. The haunting centred on strange knockings from an old cupboard, a floating light, and the shadowy figure of a tall, stooping man seen on the landing. The daughter collapsed in fright after the apparition appeared to raise its hand as if to strike her. Spiritualists later reported a pale phosphorescent glow, claiming it to be a neighbour’s spirit. Despite local scepticism, the family refused to return, and the house soon attracted crowds of onlookers and curious tenants.
