At the Railway Hotel in Middleton, landlord John O’Shea reported a mischievous ghost nicknamed “Gertie,” blamed for glasses flying from shelves, bulbs dropping from sockets, and customers being cheekily pinched. The activity was linked to a former landlady, Mary Smithies, who ran the pub with her husband Robert from 1861 to 1873. Locals joked that Gertie still enjoyed her ale, as unexplained measures of beer were often found missing.
