Theatre Royal, Stockport

The old Theatre Royal in Stockport, demolished in 1960, was reputedly haunted by two ghosts. One was seen crossing the dress-circle bar and vanishing through a wall, later discovered to be the site of a long-bricked doorway once used by actor Hamilton Jordan. The other was believed to be the spirit of Edwardian actress Clarice Mayne, whose portrait hung in the ladies’ cloakroom. Performers reported hearing the rustle of silk skirts and feeling an icy chill near the stage and dressing rooms, particularly No. 1, where she was said to appear.
