Opposite the Roman fort of Navio, the Traveller’s Rest Inn is said to be haunted by a woman in black carrying a bunch of keys, once seen by former landlady Dora Happs. Another legend tells of a young farm girl who, on Christmas Eve, fled a drunken labourer’s advances and fell down a spiral staircase to her death. Her ghost is said to return each Christmas Eve, gliding along the corridor above the bar. In the 1970s, staff and customers reported sensing an unseen presence. The inn remains open, welcoming guests who may share the night with its resident spirits.
