In the late 1960s, the caretaker of West Hill School in Stalybridge was awakened by his Alsatian acting in fear. Going downstairs, he saw a woman walk calmly toward a blank wall and vanish through it. Locals later identified the apparition as Miss Harrison, the former owner’s daughter and the last surviving member of the Harrison family, who had lived to old age and was remembered for her shabby fur coat and solitary nature. Her ghost is said to have appeared several times, often accompanied by the frightened behaviour of dogs.
