Hanging Gate Inn, Higher Sutton
The 17th-century Hanging Gate Inn near Macclesfield is said to be haunted by the ghost of a drover, described as a kindly peasant in a smock who walks calmly from room to room before vanishing through an old partition. Some locals believe the spirit could be that of Tom Steele, a former landlord, or even a sheep rustler once hanged nearby. Both owners and patrons have witnessed the apparition, and a customer’s dog once reacted violently to its unseen presence.
