Quaker Burial Ground, Mobberley

A 17th-century Quaker burial ground on Paddock Hill, Mobberley, became infamous in 1959 when locals reported an eerie glow “as though a ring of lanterns” encircled the graves. The light was strongest near a small stone marked only “D.A. 1659,” a burial missing from Quaker records. Birds were said to shun the spot, and later reports from nearby Graveyard Cottage told of knocking sounds and a white figure. Explanations ranged from marsh gas to phosphorescent decay, but none satisfied, leaving the “Mobberley light” an enduring mix of mystery and folklore.
