Thirst House Cave, Deepdale, Buxton
A Chelmorton farmer once captured a goblin, or “hob,” hoping to tame it to do his housework. On hearing its pitiful cries, he relented and freed it, whereupon it fled to a cave below Topley Pike. The site became known as Thirst House, said to contain an invisible doorway to the realm of the fairies. The hob was also believed to guard a nearby spring whose waters, if drunk on Good Friday, could cure any illness.
