Knutsford

Knutsford is a Georgian market town surrounded by meres, country estates, and the flat farmland of mid-Cheshire. It has a well-preserved town centre and a character shaped by the prosperous families who built and occupied the surrounding halls and houses across several centuries. Elizabeth Gaskell grew up here and used it as the model for Cranford, which gives some sense of how it presents itself.

Its ghost lore is modest and fairly consistent in tone. Several of the town’s older properties have accumulated haunting traditions across multiple occupancies, and accounts from the surrounding estates add to a body of material that, while not large, is reasonably well-attested.
