Chamber Hall, Oldham

Chamber Hall in Oldham, demolished in the early 20th century, was long associated with the notorious “Chamber Ha’ Boggart.” From the 1600s, the spirit was said to torment residents with noises and pranks, accepting nightly food offerings to stay calm. One maid mocked its meal and was branded by a hot iron in revenge. When exorcised, the boggart demanded a live gamecock be buried beneath the doorstone, declaring it would not return while “hollins and ivvens are green.” Even in later years, unexplained knocks were still heard, and locals avoided Chamber Lane after dark.
