Lidwell Chapel, Little Haldon

Hidden in woodland near Dawlish, the ruins of Lidwell Chapel are said to be haunted by the ghost of a murderous monk. According to legend, a sailor once sought shelter there during a storm, only to find his host preparing to stab him during a false baptism. The sailor fought back and trapped the monk down the chapel well, where the remains of earlier victims were later found. The monk’s ghost is still said to rise from the well, his head and shoulders thrashing as he tries in vain to escape both the pit and his guilty past.
