Staircase House, Stockport
Staircase House, a fifteenth-century timber-framed building on Stockport’s Market Place, has long been associated with reports of unexplained activity. Former tenant Enid Millward described footsteps, knocking, and sounds of movement from newly uncovered upper rooms in the 1950s. A recurring apparition, usually described as the upper half of a young man in Edwardian clothing, has been seen on the staircase. Later accounts mention fleeting shadows, strange lights, and further noises, including reports following the building’s restoration and reopening in 2005.
