The Sampford Ghost, Sampford Peverell
In 1810, the home of Mr. John Chave in Sampford Peverell became infamous for violent poltergeist activity. Witnessed by the Reverend Caleb Colton, servants were struck by invisible hands, furniture moved unaided, and a sword and Bible were hurled across the room. Nightly raps, footsteps, and shaking curtains terrified residents and visitors alike. Some accused Chave of faking the haunting to buy the property cheaply, but Colton insisted the disturbances were genuine. The family eventually fled, and although later speculation suggested smugglers or hidden passageways, the mystery of the Sampford Ghost was never solved.
