Eyam
Eyam is the village that chose to quarantine itself when plague arrived in 1665, losing around a third of its population in the months that followed. That decision, and the deaths that resulted from it, are documented in unusual detail, and the village preserves a corresponding record in its buildings, its graves, and its memorials. It is a place where history sits very close to the surface.
Its haunting accounts reflect that weight. Reports are concentrated in properties directly connected to the plague year and are tied to named individuals from the documentary record rather than to general atmosphere. Eyam is among the more seriously considered haunted locations in Derbyshire, and the accounts it has generated deserve more careful attention than the village’s status as a tourist destination sometimes allows.
