Trainee postman Andy Chorlton, of Great Moor, Stockport, encountered a โsmoky form of a manโ while travelling in the lift at the underground Guardian Telephone Exchange in Piccadilly. The figure was seen ascending the stairs beside the lift shaft and remained visible even after Andy reached the top floor. The building has a dark history: in the 1950s, during the shaftโs construction, a worker from a nearby site fell to his death after peering over the edge. Other sightings of the apparition have been reported, and the spirit is widely believed to be that of the unfortunate labourer.
